Carey Garden Design Studio is an RHS Chelsea Gold Medal winning garden design studio based in North Norfolk. The practice was set up by husband and wife duo, Joe & Laura Carey.
Laura Carey
Designer
Laura has a specialist eye for colour, texture and the subtleties that bring a design to life. Her designs and planting schemes are increasingly recognised for their refined detail and atmospheric quality.
In addition to all things gardens, Laura is passionate about Tony’s Chocolonely (and the occasional tequila, but don’t tell her I told you).
Joe Carey
Designer
Joe is an ideas person - creative, versatile and endlessly curious. At his core, he has an intuitive understanding of space and how to shape it. With years of experience teaching design, Joe brings a patient, thoughtful approach to every garden.
Joe collects hobbies - don’t start a conversation about sourdough or single origin coffee, unless you have a lot of time on your hands.
Hannah Phillips
Studio Manager
Hannah is the engine behind the scenes - brilliantly organised, detail-focused and always one step ahead. Highly creative and resourceful, she brings clarity and momentum to every project.
Fun facts about Hannah: She loves thrift shopping, only drinks coffee on holiday - and knows a lot about ganseys (look it up).

Ben is our super-cool and brilliant in-house photographer. With years of experience across digital media and an exceptional eye for detail, he captures our projects beautifully. Calm, creative and endlessly patient, Ben is the man behind the camera (so who took this picture?).
He's fluent in French too, which we're convinced will come in handy one day.

Bibi is not just any dog.
Her unique ability to juggle the busy life of a working dog whilst also maintaining a healthy work-life balance is what makes her such a valued member of the team.
Without Bibi, we’d just be human.
How the garden design studio began...
Laura grew up in wild coastal Wales surrounded by luscious greenery, native wildflowers, breathtaking countryside (and plenty of rain!). Moving to Nottingham to study Decorative Arts, Laura soon started up her own business designing botanical prints and illustrations for independent and international retailers. It was here that her passion for all things plants grew into an obsession. Before long, every available window sill was occupied by seed trays. The house became a living jungle and it was all in the name of 'research'.
Joe, having been born in North London, spent his teenage years fascinated by the exciting innovations of the city landscapes and green outdoor spaces. He then went on to study Design (also in Nottingham) before beginning a successful career teaching design at a prestigious secondary school in Hertfordshire.
Together they studied, honed their skills and before long, they realised that their 'very particular set of skills' acquired over the many years of immersion in design, meant that their approach to Garden Design was different. Having a critical understanding of space, colour and structure - combined with horticultural expertise, has enabled them to bring fresh innovation to an already exciting industry.
Now based in Holt, North Norfolk, the studio works on a variety of projects across the county and country, covering a range of garden contexts.
In 2023, they were awarded a Gold Medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and have appeared in multiple magazines and TV programmes. In 2024, Carey Garden Design Studio LLP was named as the winner in the House & Garden Design Awards for new and emerging creative talent in the prestigious Rising Star Award. In 2025, at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, they were awarded a Gold Medal, Best Small Show Garden and Best Contractor, followed by a second Gold Medal at RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival.
