Carey Garden Design Studio is an RHS Chelsea Gold Medal winning garden design studio based in North Norfolk. The practice was set up by husband and wife duo, Joe & Laura Carey.
Laura Carey
(DESIGNER, BA Hons)
Laura is never not looking at plants. Her specialist eye for colour and critical understanding of structure is what makes Laura’s plant schemes utterly breathtaking.
Laura has spent years refining and researching the most suitable plants for all types of British gardens. Laura is fixated on the intimate details of each plant - carefully designing the garden to work in harmony with its surroundings. Teeny tiny details such as stem colour, leaf shape, silhouette or even the colour of the seed-head will inform Laura’s decision making when designing a bespoke scheme.
Joe Carey

Joe is an ideas person. He can turn his hand to almost anything - but at his very core, he is someone who really ‘gets’ space. Quite often, our clients will have a range of exciting and wild dreams for their garden - and Joe is very good at curating these desires into beautiful and cohesive spaces.
With his years of experience in teaching design, he is patient and considered in his approach to every garden. Joe is always finding inspiration and loves to see innovative use of materials.

If ever you have the privilege to meet her - you will understand. Her unique ability to juggle the busy life of a working dog whilst also maintaining a healthy work-life balance is what makes her such a valued member of the team.
Without Bibi, we’d just be human.
How the garden design studio began...
Laura grew up in wild coastal Wales surrounded by luscious greenery, native wildflowers, breathtaking countryside (and plenty of rain!). Moving to Nottingham to study Decorative Arts, Laura soon started up her own business designing botanical prints and illustrations for independent and international retailers. It was here that her passion for all things plants grew into an obsession. Before long, every available window sill was occupied by seed trays. The house became a living jungle and it was all in the name of 'research'.
Joe, having been born in North London, spent his teenage years fascinated by the exciting innovations of the city landscapes and green outdoor spaces. He then went on to study Design (also in Nottingham) before beginning a successful career teaching design at a prestigious secondary school in Hertfordshire.
Together they studied, honed their skills and before long, they realised that their 'very particular set of skills' acquired over the many years of immersion in design, meant that their approach to Garden Design was different. Having a critical understanding of space, colour and structure - combined with horticultural expertise, has enabled them to bring fresh innovation to an already exciting industry.
Now based in Holt, North Norfolk, the garden designers work on a variety of projects across the county and country. Their designs and projects cover a range of garden styles, from cottage gardens to more urban, contemporary outdoor spaces. In 2023, they were awarded a Gold Medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and have appeared in multiple magazines and TV programmes.
