Cley-Next-the-Sea, Norfolk

This beautiful renovation project turned the focus of the property to its own gardens. With one uninterrupted room running from front to back, and overlooking enviable views of the salt marshes, our task was to bring the two gardens together in order to unify the house with it’s incredible surroundings.

Cley is in an area of outstanding natural beauty, with a dark skies policy and many other conservation restraints maintaining the integrity of this trading port of the Middle Ages. This project brought together some of Norfolk’s finest craftsmen to ensure the finished result was authentic. We learned more about flint walling on this project than you can find in any textbook. It was an honour to see masters at work - as we drew out what we wanted, and watched it emerge from the ground up.

A sketch of a garden design showing a path to a gate. Along the path are trees, plant borders and potted plants. A flint wall, typical for Cley, separates the bordered path from a patio area.
A garden sketch shows an outdoor seating area, with a wooden sofa built by the raised beds. A table with a plant on it sits in the centre, and plants fill the raised beds on the left, right and foreground.
Joe and Laura are an absolute pleasure to work with. Joe made sense of our rather awkward site and Laura’s planting schemes are lovely (and practical). Having worked with other garden designers in the past, we can honestly say that this collaboration was by far the most enjoyable we’ve had. We’re only half planted-up, so I’ll upload photos once we’ve finished.
